When the 2026 NBA Playoffs bracket was set, most analysts penciled Denver in as the team Minnesota would need to overcome to prove they belonged among the West's elite. A few games into the series, the Timberwolves are making a compelling argument that they do.

Minnesota's Defensive Identity

The Timberwolves came into this series with a clear plan: make everything hard for Nikola Jokić. Not stop him — that's not possible — but make every touch, every action, every decision cost Denver energy and time. Their scheme has been physical without being reckless, and the commitment to help defense has been the best version of what head coach Chris Finch has been building toward.

Anthony Edwards has taken a clear step as a two-way player in these playoffs. His defensive attention to detail — something that was sometimes inconsistent during the regular season — has been sharp, and his willingness to take the big shot on the other end gives Minnesota a security blanket in late-game situations.

Denver's Adjustments

The Nuggets have not been at their best. Jokić is still producing — the numbers don't lie — but the supporting cast has been inconsistent, and Michael Porter Jr.'s shooting variance is a factor in every game. Denver's adjustment in the half-court offense has been to simplify: more Jokić isolations, more deliberate execution, fewer of the free-flowing sets that make their offense generational.

Jamal Murray's playoff presence is the variable that could swing this series. When he's locked in and getting to his spots, Denver has a second scorer who changes every defensive calculation Minnesota makes. The Timberwolves can account for one; two is significantly harder.

The Outlook

This series will be decided in the margins — second-chance points, transition defense, three-point shooting variance. Minnesota has the defensive infrastructure to compete. The question is whether they have enough offensive firepower to close a series against the most experienced team in the West. The answer, so far, is closer to yes than most expected.
